Model 3 Unable to install rear license plate on Model 3 self. I know there have been quality control issues with the 3 and am wondering if anyone has run into problems removing the existing license plate holder: They told me to bring it to service center.

I stopped by the service center without an appointment and they replaced the plastic inserts for me. They taped the area around the screws so as not to scratch the car, and used a prying tool to yank them out. They popped in some fresh ones and they seem to fit much better. Thanks for the suggestion! I did give that a try, unfortunately it didn't work. I also tried angling the screw to force the plastic to bite, as well as just good ole brute force.

I'll take it to the service center, but was wondering if this was a common issue and maybe people have found a way to fix it at home. I just put my plates on last Friday: I'd take it to the service center.

Did you use a powered screwdriver to remove it the first time you tried? You should probably only use a hand one to prevent damage to the screw holder part behind the trunk lid. If you used a powered one you likely stripped or broke the part that holds the screw in place so it's just spinning in there when you are turning the screw.

I did this on my X. I have a small prybar that I taped a towel to. I pried behind the screw and reversed the impact driver at the same time. Screws were removed and I was able to replace the plastic threaded inserts. It requires a torque of X to break the screw free and come out of the plastic boss.

If that torque is applied via a hand screwdriver or a screw gun non impact it'll perform identically. Did you ever solve this? My car doesn't seem to have come with a mount for the rear license plate, just 4 pieces of plastic that slot into square holes. Am I missing something?

Just check to make sure that the fittings are snug and don't tighten too much. For my own plate I put a little bit of poster tack on each of the corners and center of the plate so there's just a little bit of cushion between the car and the plate.

My issue was that the plastic fittings were stripped. Probably any old license plate screw will work. If you're near a service center you can stop by and they should give you screw.

Probably no appointment needed but it'd be safer to call first. I was able to buy a couple of fresh 7mm body screw grommets at McLendon's Hardware and they worked well. The metal in the trunk is very light gauge so you don't want anything you have to press in hard. Once they snap out with a hard pull, you can replace them with metal screw on. Just a guess though, better to be safe and take it in. I can describe the plastic fittings to be similar to a drywall anchor.
